Hello there, I'm

James

Butler. A product designer currently Oakland, CA.

Recently, I've been designing internal AI tooling at Apple to support developers in streamlining their workflows. I led the design and delivery of a new internal platform, collaborating closely with stakeholders and cross-functional partners to ship polished, production-ready designs. Along the way, I worked across testing and QA efforts to make sure every detail was covered.

Before that, I was at Hinge Health, where I created new internal tools for the billing and finance teamshelping them organize contracts and analyze financial data. During my time there, I led the design of several key tools, including the LLM Contract Assistant and a new Discounting Tool. One project I'm especially proud of is the Bill Troubleshooting Tool, which significantly improved clarity and efficiency for both the ops and engineering teams.

Prior to Hinge, I spent over three years at Alto Pharmacy, contributing across multiple teams including Billing, Patient Success, and Innovation. I played a key role in helping grow the design team while shaping projects that improved the patient experience. A few highlights: the Patient First Experience, which gave patients clearer ways to communicate and confirm fulfillment needs, and expanding Alto's Over the Counter Meds access. Opening the door for patients without written prescriptions to finally use Alto's services.

Earlier in my career, I helped build the product design team at Faire and gained valuable experience as part of a small, fast-moving team at CreativeLive.

As a designer, I love uncovering insights through research, collaborating through critique and workshops, and refining design systems until everything clicks into place. I'm always excited to dive into new challenges and bring fresh thinking to my work. Lately, I've been especially curious about how automation and AI can reshape human-centered designand what new patterns will emerge from it. I thrive in fast-paced, dedicated teams that care deeply about craft and execution.

Outside of work, you'll often find me relaxing in my home garden, bopping around Oakland or SF with my partner and our two pups, or trying out new restaurants. On weekends, I like to wind down by building something new in my home workshop.
